Many years ago now, when I worked (for 30 years) for The Johannesburg Electricity Department I was always intrigued by a picture on the wall of Wessels Barnard (“Barney”, who eventually became The City Electrical Engineer). This picture depicted a calf wandering aimlessly about leaving a zigzag trail all over the place and, in the picture, the following poem was printed which impressed me immensely. Long after I retired (in 1991), for years and years I tried to find this poem but without success. So, eventually, I contacted Barney who told me that the picture had gone to his daughter in the USA.
