Feng Shui in 2010
by
Andrew Graham

When we enter a building, we are affected by it's 'feel'. We all have buildings we love – buildings where we immediately feel at home and comfortable. There are other buildings we dislike, and we can't get out of them fast enough. Andrew Graham tells us why and how to optimise life in 2010 and beyond using the ancient art of Feng Shui.

The near universal response of people to a place, building or room is an immediate instinctive reaction that is felt by most people and cannot be explained by Western science. Fortunately, for 5?000 years the Chinese have been studying these instinctive reactions and Feng Shui is the study of the effect buildings and their surroundings have on us.
Flying Star Feng Shui is the most powerful form of Feng Shui. It is based on energies generated by the interaction between the Earth's magnetic field and a metaphysical entity known as 'the Heavenly Yang Qi'. These energies relate to our 'instinctive' feel and reaction to buildings – we all feel them – but in most cases we are not aware of just how much we are affected by them.
'Heavenly Yang Qi' is said to be an energy that comes from above, hits us on the top of our head when we walk outside, and then goes down toward the centre of the Earth. This indicates something to do with gravity, so the energies we use in Feng Shui are probably generated by an interaction between gravity and the Earth's magnetic field.
We are pretty sure that birds and animals use these energies for navigation. They all relate to being able to find their way back to their lairs and nests, so they can breed and feed their young, surely one of the most important instincts for the survival of life.
We know there are nine different forms of 'Heavenly Yang Qi' and that each one 'rules' for 20 years. When the roof is put onto a building, the 'ruling Heavenly Yang Qi' is trapped inside and this affects both the feel and the use of the building. A Victorian building 'feels' like a Victorian, you can build an identical building today and it will feel totally different, and it will have a totally different effect on you.

In Feb 2004 the 8 Yang Qi replaced the 7 Yang Qi as the 'ruling' Heavenly Yang Qi.

A new ruling Yang energy brings a universal change in ethos. The 7 Yang (ruler from 1984 to 2004) was an energy driving people to make as much money as possible – by whatever means, irrespective of the morality – which has led to the destruction of the world banking system, outrageous salaries being paid to incompetent managers and the huge increase in corruption and greed seen throughout the world.
The 8 Yang Chi is 'the Angel of Wealth and Happiness' – a much quieter energy than the 7 Yang Chi – so we are now in a time when people will try to find balance in their lives and in nature. We are currently seeing the 8 battling to take over from the 7 ethos – bringing a return to 'family values' and ethics. More and more people are choosing work and activities that bring balance and happiness, rather than money. Wealth will still be accumulated, but it will be good sustainable long-term wealth, not like the quick 'get rich' money made and lost on the 'dotcoms' when 7 Yang Chi was dominant.

YANG ENERGIES – WATER STARS

Every Heavenly Yang Chi has a corresponding Yang Energy (known as a Water Star) located inside every building. The location of the 9 different Yang energies inside the building is determined by the direction of the Earth's magnetic field and the ruling 'Heavenly Yang Qi' when the building was built.
Yang energies (Water Stars) affect our interaction with the outside world – they bring 'fame and fortune' – friends, clients and money.
Water Stars are active. They are carried in the air and held by water – the direct translation of Feng Shui is 'wind and water'. Water Stars need a door or window to come into the building and need to be activated before they can have any effect. Human activity and moving water are the best activators. Solid walls and 'mountains' block Yang energy.
The Water Star that corresponds to the ruling Heavenly Yang Chi is the one that everybody recognises, identifies with and feels comfortable with. People will gravitate toward the room or sector of the house that contains this energy – it becomes the natural gathering place inside the house. Most houses are instinctively set up to make the best use of this 'ruling' Yang energy.
When a new Heavenly Yang Qi takes over, many rooms or buildings (that were set up for the old qi) no longer 'feel as good as they used to' – which is why so many people moved or renovated house between 2003 and 2008. You need to make changes to the way you use a house to harness the power of the 'new' good energy, and many people preferred to buy a new house which they could renovate rather than change their existing house.
The ruling Water Star brings 'fame and fortune' and it 'controls' all the other energies that it comes in contact with – so they show only their good qualities. If it comes through the front door, people and money will flow in.
Flying Star Feng Shui calculates where the ruling Water Star is located inside the building. You can then improve the 'fame and fortune' of the inhabitants by boosting it with moving water or human activity, and create 'pathways' that allow it to flow into other areas of the building. In ancient China they would knock holes through walls to allow the good Water Stars to flow through the building
Some of the other Water Stars will have a positive effect and others a negative effect on what happens inside the building so an experienced Feng Shui practitioner can make further improvements, and literally 'fine tune' the building to bring in friends, clients, success and money.

EVERY YANG ENERGY HAS A MATCHING YIN ENERGY CALLED A 'MOUNTAIN STAR'.

Yin energies are the 'personal' energies that affect body and soul, health and relationships. They travel slowly through the Earth's surface and accumulate in walls and large pieces of furniture – which is why they are called 'Mountain Stars'. There are 9 different Mountain Stars, each affecting different people in different ways, dependant on the individual's Ming Gua. Our 'Ming Gua' relates to both our gender and the 'annual' energies present when we were born.
The 'annual' energy is one of the first things we feel when we are born, so when we feel this energy again, it takes us back to the time and place of our birth, a time we were being loved and cared for. We relate very strongly to the Mountain Star that has the same number as our Ming Gua, as well as to the Mountain Stars that support that energy.

Yin energies – Mountain Stars – are very important in homes

'When qi is tired it goes back to earth' – roughly meaning that when we have spent a hard day in the outside world, we need a place to come back to, a place where we can restore and revitalise our body and soul. When we were young and tired and hungry, we went home to our mother for love and food – she was our 'Earth Mother'. As we get older and no longer live with our mother, the building itself takes over her role and becomes our 'Earth'.
This need for a house that feels like a 'home' is very strong. More than 70% of my clients decided they wanted to buy their house as they went through the front door – where they first felt the Mountain Star in the wall – and because it matched their 'Ming Gua', they felt an immediate bond with the building.
A good Feng Shui practitioner will identify the 'soul space' for every individual inside the building so that they can 'chill out' in this space to restore and revitalise themselves.
It is also very important that we sleep with the top of our head against a wall that contains a supportive Mountain Star, so that when we sleep, our body and soul is being restored and regenerated by it. If the Mountain Star is not good, it drains or attacks us, leading to both health and relationship problems.

CURES

All the above Yin and Yang energies – Water and Mountain Stars – affect us on a subconscious or instinctive level; we are being affected by them without realising it.
We are also affected by buildings on a conscious level – colour, shape, light, and so on, all affect us.
A good experienced Feng Shui practitioner will use both subconscious and conscious energies to harmonise the problems caused by mismatched or 'bad' subconscious energies/Stars.

Some standard cures are:
? Colours – Red is used to stop conflict caused by certain Stars; Yellow to cure other Stars.
? Moving water boosts Water Stars so it is important you know what you are activating when you put in a water feature. I have seen companies going bankrupt and people losing the will to live because of water features being put in the wrong place. Equally, we have turned around failing companies by putting moving water in the right place.
? Moving bedrooms – People, especially children, are very badly affected by sleeping against a wall with a mismatched Mountain Star. I have had excellent results with children who have been unwell, unhappy or having problems at school by simply moving them to a different bedroom or, in some cases, moving their beds onto a different wall inside their own bedroom. In most cases a difference is felt within 24 hours.
? There are many other cures: calabashes, rock salt, wind chimes, chiming clocks, ceiling fans, bamboo, square and triangular shapes, and so on, all have their places, but again, you need a lot of experience to make these work.
? The best cure is to get the ruling Water Star to come into the affected area; this sometimes means demolishing a wall or putting in a new window or door.
? It is obviously best to buy, build or renovate a building that will give you maximum support and as few problems as possible so a lot of my work is input at the design stage or advising clients whether or not a building is suitable for them.
Feng Shui works and everyone is affected by it – it has nothing to do with whether or not you believe in it. It can have very severe effects and I have had to sort out many problems caused by people who have 'read a book' or 'have a natural instinct for Feng Shui'. If you want real results please use a Feng Shui practitioner who is certified and who has several years experience.?O
